Easy Day of the Dead Craft

Dia de los Muertos is a nostalgic holiday celebrated in Mexico and many Latin American countries. This Dia De Los Muertos activity is a great way to encourage larger participation in your altar in a school setting, where community members gather or even with guests in your home.

Including portraits is traditional way of including loved ones in an altar but it can be difficult to collect images when inviting others to participate. It is a perfect opportunity to remember and honor our loved ones who have passed away.

I also include these faux marigolds on my altar every year.

Use your label makers to “print out” the names of loved ones and adhere the names to each wing on the butterfly. If you have limited supplies, consider sticking multiple names per one butterfly.

How to Mount the Butterflies

There are a couple of ways to display your butterflies depending on your display. To incorporate them into the wall display you can add a drop of hot glue to the back of the butterfly and press it against the wall. If the activity is be completed by children or untrustworthy adults, consider using double sided sticky tabs instead.

The second way to display your butterflies is incorporating them into a floral display. The butterfly cut outs I used come with very thin stakes that you can easily bend or insert into a flora foam.
